Ballet and Snowflakes

Venla and Sari went to the library, where Venla found an origami book. I suck at origami, but I thought I would give it a try. Then, once we started, we realized that the book was entirely in Swedish. So I decided instead to teach her how to make those cool snow flakes that you can hang. We ended up making four of them, and they thought they were really cool.

At 5:30 I left to go to Helsinki. Taru, Oliver’s host mom, invited me to go to the ballet. She had an extra ticket for someone under 20, and thought I would like to go. I jumped at the chance and I am so glad I did. The show was Alice in Wonderland, and it was at the Finnish National Opera House. I had no idea that Alice in Wonderland had been turned into a ballet, and I wasn't sure what to expect. It was so well done. The choreography, that set, the dancers, and the music were all phenomenal. It was 2 hours long and I was completely absorbed the whole time.

I always forget how bizarre the storyline of Alice in Wonderland is. Some of the most notable odd things were at one point Alice was smoking out of a 30 ft tall bong surrounded by mushroom people, and the other being the Queen of Hearts playing a game similar to croquet, but instead of mallets she used live flamingoes and instead of balls she used hedgehogs. Just bizarre. Like I said before though, the show was incredibly well done and it had some extremely well directed moments that I won't be forgetting any time soon.

I tend to forget how much I love the performing arts when I go long periods of time without seeing a show or without being in one. Every time one of these periods ends, and I am reminded just how much I love them, it reinforces the idea in my head that I should go into the theatre as a profession.
