Long, Interesting Day

(Here is the Father's Day breakfast cake)

Last night was utterly terrible. I had what I believe to be my first migraine ever. I have no idea why I had it. I wasn’t dehydrated. Anyway, it kept me up for 2 hours and over the toilet for a half an hour. I couldn't find any pain medicine, and I was worried that if I tried to wake someone up than I would wake everyone up because they were all sleeping in the same room. Not a fun night. I woke up at eight so we could bring Jarno his gifts in bed. Breakfast was ready at the table and we sang him a song to wake him up. Then we dumped his gifts on him. I made him a card.

At the breakfast table, I totally embarrassed myself. Apparently eating banana bread with butter is only an American thing, because as soon as I put butter on it my whole family reacted and acted digusted. Sari said, “What did you do?!?! You ruined it! You know that is sweet bread right?!” A minute after that culture shock, grandmother walked into the kitchen and Aatu, being the nine year old that he is, started tattling on me like it was the worst thing you could do. At that point, I thought it would be fun to try out a new word that my friend taught me. They told me it meant “shut up.” Turns out, it doesn't just mean, “shut up,” it means, “shut the fuck up.” So. In front of my grandmother, and my whole family, at breakfast, on Father’s Day, I told my nine year old brother to shut the fuck up. Oops. Thank god they took it well. Actually my host Dad started laughing so hard he almost cried and then he toasted me. I felt so bad… Not going to make that mistake again. For those of you who want to know, the phrase that I said was, “turpa kiili,” so now you can say that to your friends.

We went to my host great grandfather’s birthday party after that. He was turning 95. He spoke zero english, but he was very sweet and Sari told me he enjoyed music. So, per Sari’s request, I sang him “Hallelujah” (The one that was in Shrek) and it actually went really well. I think he enjoyed it. I was exhausted by the end though, partly from the awful night I had had and partly from the amount of new family members I had to meet and all the things I had to do that day. After that Jarno, Venla, Aatu and I had a long, tiring train ride back.
